Michael Jackson
27" H x 8" D x 8" W
Bronze edition of 25. Welded Steel and Bronze

I have long have marveled at Michael Jackson’s dancing. I think he was an amazing artist and his dancing was unique and fascinating to me. Perhaps I connected to him because of his angular moves. I wanted to see if my style of angles and planes might be able to capture a feeling of him dancing.

I worked on and off for 3 years on this piece. I watched hours of videos of him, which sometime made it more confusing because there were so many great dance positions from which to choose and the pause button never seems to stop at the right second. I must have over 1,000 pictures of him in progress, in various poses and hairstyles.

Choosing the wardrobe was more difficult than I expected because it was always changing from video to video. I was challenged to create a texture that would feel shimmery like his famous jacket and sparkly like his glove. FYI, Michael doesn’t always wear the glove on the same hand.
I designed a base that has a step to symbolize a stage. It also has a turntable built in so it can spin in order to give him a greater sense of movement.
